Clean energy company Masdar and steelmaker Emsteel have successfully completed a pilot project in the UAE using green hydrogen to produce green steel.

This innovative process, based in Abu Dhabi, extracts iron from iron ore and is now fully operational. The renewable hydrogen used has been certified by Avance Labs, validating its compliance with the ISO 19870 methodology.

Steel production is a significant industry in the UAE, contributing to global carbon emissions, making its decarbonization critical. The partnership aims to position the UAE as a major green steel production hub, aligning with national initiatives for sustainable building materials.

Emsteel has also achieved notable reductions in carbon emissions, operating with 45% less carbon intensity than the global average.
