British Steel starts trial using technology to capture carbon emissions at Scunthorpe plant

British Steel has started a trial utilizing technology to capture carbon emissions from its Scunthorpe plant, with the aim of transforming steel manufacturing into a clean, green, and sustainable business through using electric arc furnace technology.

Despite a CO2 emissions reduction of more than 75% in the electrified steelmaking process, British Steel is still working to explore ways to further reduce CO2e intensity, including developing technology to capture CO2 generated by other parts of its manufacturing operations.

To support the development of the technology, a mobile carbon capture pilot plant has been built at British Steel's Central Power Station in Scunthorpe. The plant, developed by the University of Sheffield, will be used to extract carbon from the power station’s boiler flues.

British Steel’s experiment is part of a project at the University of Sheffield to use waste gases from manufacturing industries such as steel and glass manufacturing to produce alternative carbon sources for consumer products.

The CO2 captured from British Steel will be put into gas cylinders and transported to the University of Sheffield for conversion into synthetic transport fuels.
